Hysteroscopic fibroid removal

Hysteroscopic fibroid removal is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove fibroids that grow into or distort the uterine cavity.

A thin hysteroscope is passed through the cervix into the uterus, allowing the gynaecologist to examine the uterine cavity directly on a monitor. Specialised instruments can then be used to carefully remove the fibroid without making any abdominal incisions.

Fibroids located within the uterine cavity may cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, irregular bleeding, anaemia or difficulties becoming pregnant. Removing the fibroid can help reduce these symptoms and restore the normal shape of the uterine cavity.

In selected cases, hysteroscopic fibroid removal may also be recommended as part of fertility treatment when a fibroid is believed to interfere with conception or implantation.

As there are no abdominal incisions, recovery is usually relatively quick and postoperative discomfort is generally minimal.
